As artificial intelligence takes root in everything from science and social media to politics and policing, world-leading AI expert Toby Walsh seeks to answer a pressing question: can we trust AI or will it increasingly deceive us? Drawing from his recent essay in Griffith Review 80: Creation Stories, he offered a fascinating perspective on our increasing reliance on intelligent and autonomous technology and how we might ensure AI is harnessed as a force for good rather for nefarious ends.

Toby Walsh is the Chief Scientist of UNSW AI Institute, the new flagship UNSW (World’s Top 20 Universities in QS2024 ranking) Research Institute in artificial intelligence (AI), data science (DS) and machine learning (ML). Toby is one of the world’s leading researchers in artificial intelligence (AI). He is Professor of AI at the University of NSW and is an adjunct researcher at Data61, Australia’s Centre of Excellence for ICT Research. He has been elected a fellow of the Association for the Advancement of AI, and won the prestigious Humboldt Research Award and the Celestino Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science. He has previously held research positions in England, Scotland, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland and Sweden. He is the author of several books about AI, technology and science, including most recently, Faking It: Artificial Intelligence in a Human World.
